But first: Welcome to Livejournal, selenaK. I used to know how to link to people here, but I've forgotten... Anyway, glad you found your way here. I would have sent you a code, too, if only I still had one! I've found that a blog is a nice way of keeping in touch with several people at once - instead of mailing everybody, you just post the latest exciting ;-) news from your life in your blog, and everyone you know can read it... Very convenient for lazy mailers like me! Mind you, I'm a lazy blogger, too. As you can see by the length of time between entries here...
Anyway... my biggest news today: I've been filked. How cool is that? I'm exceedingly flattered... and it's a Farscape filk, in a way, too!
So, here goes. This is sung to the tune of 'Pinky and the Brain', and the Annie mentioned in it is Annael, a friend and fellow scaper from a Tolkien board I'm at. This was written by our board bard Inferno:
They're Annie and The Hmpf!
Yes, Annie and The Hmpf!
One is a German
The other's had enough.
They're Farscape fanatics
Their show has been frelled
Uncanny!
They're Annie and The Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf
Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf
Hmpf.
Before each night is done
Their plan will be unfurled
By posting pics of Crichton
They'll take over the world.
They're Annie and The Hmpf!
Yes, Annie and The Hmpf!
Their Save 'Scape campaign
Is easy to explain.
To prove their Farscape's worth
They'll overthrow the Earth
They're Annie
They're Annie and The Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf
Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf, Hmpf!
Frell!
Heheheh...
Other news from the Farscape front: AnduraNova, Dashan and I have started a vidder collective. So far, we've done two vids together, or rather, AnduraNova has done all the hard work, and Dashan and me have offered our, uhm, advice on everything from scenes chosen to length of snippets and style and placement of cuts. We've chosen the name 'Scape Sisters' for our group because, you know, we're on a mission from Scape... Oh, and our next vid will be shippy... Scorpy/Braca shippy. *evil cackling laughter*
In other news... Real Life in the guise of university is beginning to take up time again, and I still have 30 hours to work, too, plus I'll have to do some sports this semester if I want to survive the excavation this summer... so I'll likely be very busy these next few months.
Oh, and this is for all the Harry Potter people who are reading my LJ: you will be happy to know that I have finally seen the light. In the shape of Sirius Black.
*g* I doubt I'll actively enter the fandom - I recognise an obsession when I see one, and this *isn't* one - but I really like Sirius. Like Lupin, too. I hope they're both going to reappear in volume four?
Okay. Back to dinner now. I'm hungry. Very hungry.

All of the above
Date: 2003-04-28 08:45 pm (UTC)Sirius will be back in volume 3, but not Remus, though he gets mentioned. I'm more of a Snape girl myself, though I admit you have to have read "Goblet of Fire" to completely understand the attraction.
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 03:58 am (UTC)Yeah, that's why we're planning a John/Scorpius one beside the Braca/Scorpius one as well. :-) The two that we have done so far are an Aeryn one and one general gloom and doom vid. We'll send them to Farscape Fantasy as soon as we've put the finishing touches on them.
> - and this reminds me: I've got a couple of new excellent Jossverse ones - shall I send them?
Send me links, and I'll download them. Which reminds me that there are some excellent new vids about Scape, as well. Are you up to date, or do you want some recommendations?
>Sirius will be back in volume 3, but not Remus, though he gets mentioned.
You probably mean volume 4, do you? Glad to hear about Sirius, shame about Remus. I like them together. Make of that what you will. *g*
>I'm more of a Snape girl myself, though I admit you have to have read "Goblet of Fire" to completely understand the attraction.
Oh, I think I know most of what happens in GoF (yes, I'm a Spoiler Slut, I *know*!) and I know about Snape's past and all that. Still, he doesn't do much for me. Guess I like my men angsty, haunted and kinda cracked. Like John Crichton. Like Frodo.
There's depressingly little good Sirius fic around, btw. I think in the last two days I may actually have read all of it. Well, all of it except for those stories that slash him with Snape. Or Harry. Or anyone else but Remus. *g*
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 04:14 am (UTC)However: for good, gen HP fanfiction, I recommend Marina Frants, whom you might remember as a Methos writer, aka Mariner.
This story
http://www.sff.net/people/frants/fallonme.html
features Sirius and Lupin.
This one
http://www.sff.net/people/frants/smalltruce1.html
is about Sirius and Snape.
Both, I remind you, completely unslashy, and all of the above named are in character.
This one:
http://www.sff.net/people/frants/skittles.html
Is a funny masterpiece, concentrating on Harry and Snape, again, with everyone in character.
And by the way, good old Severus IS haunted and slightly cracked. And sarcastic, which makes for entertaining reading. And as opposed to Sirius never was a golden boy with the in-crowd. And the most shades-of-grey character in Rowling's universe, since he still can't stand Our Hero, has the past from hell and yet is fighting for the good guys. Not that I'm partisan or anything.
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 04:43 am (UTC)Well, how large are they? I'm not sure how large an attachment gmx will accept... Do you have ICQ? You can send files with ICQ...
>However: for good, gen HP fanfiction, I recommend Marina Frants, whom you might remember as a Methos writer, aka Mariner.
Ah. I'd already discovered Mariner, but didn't know she was Marina. Yes, I remember her from HL.
>This story

features Sirius and Lupin.
That was one of the first I discovered.
>This one

is about Sirius and Snape.
Okay, I will check that one out, as I don't know it yet.
Both, I remind you, completely unslashy, and all of the above named are in character.
>And by the way, good old Severus IS haunted and slightly cracked. And sarcastic, which makes for entertaining reading. And as opposed to Sirius never was a golden boy with the in-crowd.
I wouldn't exactly call Sirius a golden boy... But, you know, the fact that he was popular and careless and all that once is exactly the point for me. 'Fallhöhe' is the point. It's no accident I mentioned John and Frodo above - their stories are so similar. They're people who've so far been on the sunny side of life and suddenly become acquainted with the nightmarish side of it. I'm not sure why that fascinates me more than the ennoblement of the downtrodden... but it does. Which is strange, because given my history I should be sympathising more with the downtrodden. Maybe I'm kinda vengeful and this is why I like to see the popular and happy ones fall... though I wouldn't like to think that.
Anyway, Sirius falls firmly into the Frodo and John category, and even if I cannot really explain why that type of character fascinates me so much, the fact remains that it's a pattern I've always fallen for.
>And the most shades-of-grey character
I'm not always the most intrigued by the most shade-of-grey character... Sometimes I am (Methos, Alucard), but just as often, I'm fascinated by the one with the greatest 'Fallhöhe' (How the frell do you say that in English? My dictionary wouldn't say.)
Well, actually, Sirius definitely *is* a shade of grey. I get distinctly dangerous vibes off him - not exactly the makings of a good guy. He really reminds me of later seasons' John quite a bit.
>in Rowling's universe, since he still can't stand Our Hero, has the past from hell and yet is fighting for the good guys. Not that I'm partisan or anything.
I guess I can see that he's interesting. But Sirius is just as interesting - you could say they're both kind of in a similar place, but have come there from different directions.
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 05:35 am (UTC)Might I add I'm ecstatic at the prospect of a John/Scorpius one in addition to the Scorpy/Braca? Which songs will you use? Now you only have to add a John/Rygel and a Scorpius/Sikozu, and my happiness is complete.
Sirius: I just emailed you the very entertaining summaries from the "Tough Guide to HP Fanfiction". I agree, he's very interesting, BUT with Sirius I never doubt he's going to do the right thing in the end. (As opposed to John and Methos.)
Agreed about Sirius and Snape coming to a similar place through different routes. Near the end of GoF, there's a very entertaining scene where Dumbledore tells them they have to behave and work together now, and they react identically.
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 10:02 am (UTC)Well, I'd be happy to do a John/Rygel one, since I'm the only other John/Rygel shipper around! I'd even dedicate it to you! LOL
However, the obvious song choice, 'Kiss that Frog' is already taken, and since we've just found out that 'Peacekeeper', which we've been vidding Aeryn to, has already been done, and since I'm also keen on doing a John/Harvey one to 'Slightly Mad' which *also* has already been used for a vid, albeit a Crais one, I'm getting a bit reluctant of using the obvious musical choices... I'm beginning to think we should find something more original sometime soon... On the other hand, we do have different concepts for all the above mentioned songs than the first vidders had. 'Peacekeeper' is a general PK vid in its first incarnation, whereas ours is Aeryn, 'Slightly Mad' is Crais, whereas ours - if we do it; at the moment it's just an idea that I'm fond of - would be John/Harvey; and 'Kiss That Frog' would be John/Rygel whereas KobaTV's original vid is a general Rygel vid.
But I think we should really do something original first before we do all these 'remakes'. ;) Which does not mean to say that we won't do the 'remakes'. Actually, I'd love to do them.
>Sirius: I just emailed you the very entertaining summaries from the "Tough Guide to HP Fanfiction". I agree, he's very interesting, BUT with Sirius I never doubt he's going to do the right thing in the end. (As opposed to John and Methos.)
Well, granted, I don't know volume four yet. However, with Sirius as he presents himself in part three of the Potter saga, I'm not that certain at all. Well, I guess it depends a bit on what you consider 'the right thing'. He was awfully eager to kill Peter Pettigrew, if you ask me. Sure, Peter's on the wrong side now, and Remus wasn't above wanting to kill him, either... but still... (And that 'joke' he played on Snape wasn't harmless, either, though I'll put that down to the stupidity of teenage boys.)
And as for John and Methos, well, at least definitely for John, I have to disagree. John still has, despite all, a basic decency (like Sirius). Let's leave Methos out of this, 'cause Methos is so far removed from any normal moral categories that it's almost impossible to compare him with *anybody*, except maybe my favourite vampire, Alucard from Hellsing. But John and Sirius are actually very similar – basically decent guys who've suffered more than anyone could bear and who are slightly cracked due to their experience. They are 'good', but they are also damaged, and have human failings. I think they both could easily get carried away given the right, or rather, wrong, circumstances. With John we've seen it happen, with Sirius we haven't (so far), but I think it's very well possible.
Re: All of the above
John/Rygel: How about the HL title song ? You know - "Here we are, born to be kings, we're the princes of the uuuuuniverse"...
And hey, SOMEONE sooner or later has to do a Scorpius vid to "Sympathy for the Devil".
The Jossverse vids are on their way.
I agree that John still has a basic set of ethics; however, he can go against them at times.
Good point about Sirius really meaning to kill Peter Pettigrew; still, he didn't. (Suddenly I have flashes of Harry yelling "Sirius! I want him to live!") BTW, one of the annoying things about MWPP stories is that they tend to leave Peter out altogether or present him as someone who was obviously bad from the start. Of course, if Peter hadn't been a trusted, integrated part of the gang, and a real friend, Sirius' and Remus' reactions wouldn't make sense. Incidentally, Peter is the first example of a Gryffindor gone bad, which is something of a relief. (I dislike the ideas of kids having a determined fate at age 11.)
Absolutely agreed about the non-harmlessness of Sirius' teenage prank. Snape could have died, and it's awfully tempting to go with the fanfic speculation that the fact that from his pov, Sirius and Remus had been trying to kill him and gotten away with it with no more than a "boys will be boys" slap from Dumbledore might have added to his becoming a Deatheater.
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 01:29 pm (UTC)I haven't because I don't know the song! Who's it by?
>John/Rygel: How about the HL title song ? You know - "Here we are, born to be kings, we're the princes of the uuuuuniverse"...
Hmmm... Rygel - maybe. But John? I dunno... gotta think about it for a bit...
>And hey, SOMEONE sooner or later has to do a Scorpius vid to "Sympathy for the Devil".
Oh, that's a good one! I'll suggest that to the Sisters. :-)
>The Jossverse vids are on their way.
Cool. Thanks.
>I agree that John still has a basic set of ethics; however, he can go against them at times.
And so can Sirius. Actually, I get more mad 'kill! kill! kill!' vibes off Sirius at the moment than I get off John.
>Good point about Sirius really meaning to kill Peter Pettigrew; still, he didn't. (Suddenly I have flashes of Harry yelling "Sirius! I want him to live!")
Well, and that is, basically, what Harry does:
--> "NO!" Harry yelled. He ran forwards, placing himself in front of Pettigrew, facing the wands. "You can't kill him," he said breathlessly. "You can't."
Sirius and Remus did *not* decide on their own to be noble and let Peter live. (BTW, I'm kinda chilled at Remus's behaviour in this scene. I mean, "You should have realised, if Voldemort didn't kill you, we would. Goodbye, Peter."?!? Werewolf or not, he's the last person I would have expected this calm assertion from.)
Another aside: Peter talking to Ron: So. Very. Gollum. - Dumbledore talking to Harry about sparing Peter: So. Very. Gandalf and Frodo.
>BTW, one of the annoying things about MWPP stories
MWPP?
>Incidentally, Peter is the first example of a Gryffindor gone bad, which is something of a relief. (I dislike the ideas of kids having a determined fate at age 11.)
BTW, if Slytherin's run such a great risk of turning to the dark forces - why the frell does Hogwarts even teach them???
Re: All of the above
Date: 2003-04-29 10:38 pm (UTC)Remus "Hi, Peter; bye, Peter" attitude: I don't think it has anything to do with his werewolf background. It's Remus the person feeling betrayed not just because of the James and Lily deaths but because Sirius spent the last twelve years in Azkaban. But I agree, considering Remus is otherwise presented as mild-mannered and the ultimate nice guy, it's startling.
MWPP: Moony, Wormtail, Prongs and Padfoot - the nicknames Remus, Peter, James and Sirius used for themselves. In fanfic, it's a handy short term to indicate a story is set in the "Marauder" era.
Tolkien influences: of course. Though most people equate Peter with Grima Wormtongue, not Gollum, probably due to his nickname. Incidentally, Peter is back in volume 4 as well.
Why Slytherin? Because ambition and smarts and a disregard for the rules are not, per se, negative traits. (Pointed out, among other things, by the Tom Riddle/Harry Potter parallels - in Chamber of Secrets but also throughout the series.) Also, with Slytherin House Dumbledore has a chance to influence those kids whereas if there was no Slytherin at Hogwarts they would get send to a Dark Wizards Only school, presumably, and be doomed for sure.
Interestingly, when one checks the main villains of the books, we get by no means a confirmation of what Ron tells Harry about Dark Wizards coming all from Slytherin:
Philospher's Stone: The villain turns out not to be Slytherin Severus Snape but ex-Ravenclaw Quirrel.
Chamber of Secrets: Tom Riddle aka Voldemort, of course, but as I said, this is also the book which points out the parallels between him and Harry most strongly.
Prisoner of Azkaban: Peter Pettigrew (ex-Gryffindor)
Goblet of Fire: Crouch Junior in disguise; another ex-Gryffindor.
OTOH, really evil Slytherins aside from Voldemort: well, the Malfoys. Draco is a petty bully and Lucius is a ruthless bastard, but neither of them is the main villain in any of the existing books. Snape, as stated earlier, is shades of grey, certainly an antagonist in the sense that he makes Harry's life difficult but not a villain. And the film version of Chamber of Secrets, which was done in consultation with JK Rowlings, shows that Moaning Myrtle (remember, the toilet ghost?) was a Slytherin.

Date: 2003-04-29 10:04 am (UTC)I could send you one of the latest FS vids... but my burner is frelled at the moment. Apparently it will take 6 to 8 weeks to repair it. :-( But I can still send you vids, then. hehe, and by then there'll of course be *more* vids than there are now, so it might work out for the best. :)
CD arrived - thanks!
