I wonder...

if Sam and Gene ever argue about the relative merits of the various Doctors. Gene, of course, predates Doctor Who, he had a Wholess childhood (my god, he's prehistoric!), but if he did start to watch the show at some point, his allegiance probably lies with Hartnell or Troughton. For Sam, on the other hand, the One True Doctor must be either Pertwee (though he may be just a tad too young for that) or Tom Baker. Baker, probably, simply because that must have been the predominant Doctor of his childhood.

Hmm...

Baker is most likely for Sam due to Sam's age and Baker's length of tenure. Otoh, Sam could also be a valiant upholder of an minority opinion and root for Five, because all of his friends dissed Fivey in a "only Tom Baker and no one else!" fit upon regeneration.

As for Gene, methinks in 1973 he'd be likely to declare the true hero of the show is clearly the Brigadier, for doing his job in a non-nonesense manner and putting up with the slightly insane excentric on the team on an ongoing basis...

Oh yeah!

Gene totally would identify with the Brigadier's plight.

But he still must have a favourite Doctor, even if the Doctor is not the favourite character... c'mon, everyone has a favourite Doctor! ;-)

In that case, I say Gene didn't discover his Doctor until the 80s, because he'd definitely root for Six (blustering attitude, occasionally quite vicious, but of course decent in core).

I like Six! Not as a favourite (I don't really have a single favourite Doctor, more like a Top 3 Favourite Regenerations), but I do like Six a lot. Admittedly mostly because of the audios, which was when they gave Colin Baker decent scripts, and he truly shone in the role.

I've heard good things about Six!

Sadly, I don't have his eps yet. That will be remedied soon, though. I hope.

I don't have a favourite Doctor :p

But that's because a) I don't like Dr Who, and b) [livejournal.com profile] keozen says that because "my" Doctor was Sylvester McCoy, that's what's to blame. Apparently.

What's wrong with Sylvester McCoy, asks the Seven fan?

Well...

I haven't seen any 7th Doctor eps yet - I only know Doctors 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, and 11 (barely), so far - but I have to echo that question. My friend [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria, whose judgment I rather trust, loves the 7th Doctor and her reasons sound good to me...

I meant 10, not 11, of course. For some reason I keep confusing the two, today.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been trying to think what to say, without sounding like an utter plank. So apologies in advance if I do.

I only watched the episodes as a kid and haven't rewatched since (and have no real desire to do so), so I can't really say what's wrong with Sylvester McCoy. Also I can't really speak for [livejournal.com profile] keozen either, but thinking about it, he seemed to think that was reason enough for not liking Dr Who at all (maybe he came off with a worse impression of McCoy than I did? *shrugs* because, to be honest, I was quite surprised when he said that (and I bet he doesn't remember it now, heh) )

Actually, after watching The Silurians,

where the Doctor with his more unconventional worldview often chafes against the regulations-and-procedure-happy Brigadier, that identification could work the other way round just as easily: I mean, Sam's the guy who always wants to uphold proper procedure and so on, and Gene's the one who's mainly focused on 'results'! *g*

Oh, and also:

the Doctor is the one with the beloved car! ;-)

Ah, but would Gene identify with the Doctor's desire to save the Silurians as opposed to the Brig's decision to blow them to kingdom come?

No. But there were moments - both in The Silurians and in Spearhead From Space - where the Doctor cheerfully (or, sometimes, grimly) went against what the Brigadier thought was 'right', that made me think of Gene.

I don't think they map onto each other perfectly, either way.

Now you're making me wonder about a crossover in which it's Bessie versus the Quattro.

And thus we learn Selena has rewatched far more AtA than LoM and can keep only one of Gene's cars in her memory.
