I just talked to a very friendly, very cheerful employee of my city's waste disposal department, about what to do with several liters of old olive oil, sunflower oil and other types of leftover oils I've finally decided to rid our kitchen of.

On a phone hotline.

At 2 a.m. in the morning.

I really should have asked her what they need a 24-hour hotline for... I mean, it was nice to be able to ask that question right when it occurred to me, but... wtf? What garbage-related emergencies could there be that *really* require a 24-hour hotline?

Maybe I should call again...

Maybe it's because the Germans are so environmentally-minded that they don't want to waste any opportunity to keep their cities clean from garbage and waste, not even at night!

If you call a hotline of that kind here in Italy (not that there's any, duh!), either no-one would answer or the person who answers would be royally pissed off because you've disturbed his/her beauty sleep! ;)

It seems a bit drastic, but what would happen if some terrorist wants to get rid of 3 kilos of plutonium in the middle of the night and no one answers the phone? ^^

Germany can be so awesome at times. Is there any other country in the world with such a hotline?

The real question is, how did you know there was a hotline for waste disposal to begin with? I didn't even know we had one.

*it's tempted to call, too*
