For everyone who, like me, hasn't had enough DS9 in their lives for years, why not join [livejournal.com profile] ds9agogo? I did yesterday, and it looks good. And the show just started to be shown again in the US a few days ago, so there are even newbies! And new discussions! And old discussions that are so old they're almost new again! ;-)

And while you're at it, join [livejournal.com profile] celestial_templ! That community needs a shot in the arm and, plus, also, fic. Fic!

Sorry, I'm a horrible fic writer.

That is to say, I'm horribly slow. I manage about two short fics a year, on average. Last year, I think, I only wrote one, although I finished a number of older WiPs. The kind of impromptu writing, a whole story in a day, or a few days, that most people seem to be doing here on LJ is something I can only dream of. So, I wouldn't really be able to contribute much to a fic writing community. (I am member of one, but only because [livejournal.com profile] ballyharnon signed me up without asking, which flattered me so much that I couldn't leave. *g*

Yes, yes, quite. She says, having been a member of c_t for ages now and having not written a single story for it, also says she who has been working on her [livejournal.com profile] babficathon story for something like three months now, and still is, despite the fact that it was due yesterday. You could join anyway, just to mock us read stuff. *g* And I hear you about the crazy lunatics on LJ who can crank out a story a day. But they are crazy lunatics and not part of this Human world that you and I know.

Either way, welcome to DS9 LJ fandom. Enjoy your stay. Only a few of us bite.

it wouldn't be much good, really.

Several things about reading fic on LJ:

1.) I am extremely picky when reading fic; being member of a fic community makes me feel as if I have to comment on everything, but it's highly likely I will only really like a fraction of what's there, and thus I will feel uneasy and probably not comment on *anything*. (Yes, I know - this is stupid. But I can't help it.)

2.) Some three years ago I realised that reading fic was detrimental to my own writing efforts. It made me feel bad to read the really good stuff, because it made me painfully aware of my shortcomings, not in a constructive way but in a way that paralysed and demotivated me. I feel better about my writing now, so maybe that wouldn't be as much of a problem anymore. However, sifting the net for good stuff also took too much time, time I could have used for writing. So, since then I have tried to channel my desire to read certain kinds of fanfic into *writing* those kinds of fanfic. And I do write more these days. I only never seem to be able to *finish* anything. I always lose my way, somewhere in the middle of the story.

Thanks for the welcome, btw.

And don't worry, I didn't join DS9 LJ fandom just to whine. ;-)

Hell, I might even dig out that ancient DS9 WiP that I still have somewhere on my hard drive... It's about Al Lorenzo, 'cause he intrigues me.

Needless to say, I never contribute anything there. I am writing a fic for a challenge there, but the community will probably fold before I am ready to post it. Arrrgh. I really wish I could write faster. But somehow, my thought processes are just too slow. It's like walking in a mist - I can't move too quickly, because I never really know where I'm going.

Some people find the habit of writing really short stuff -- 500 word, or even 100 word drabbles -- helpful to getting the muse talking and the creative juices flowing.

I tried it myself, but 100 words is really too short. 500 words is a reasonable length, I mean, you can say something in 500 words, but I can't crank those out with any rapidity either. I need to learn to forget about these pesky complicated time-travel plots and get down to brass tacks. *g*

I'm not much of a drabble person.

I don't like to read them, so I don't really think I would like to write them. Also, I'd rather use my writing time to continue one of my 5+ WiPs.

I do write semi-regularly. I even seem to be increasing my speed somewhat, lately - I have, in the last six months, twice been able to write something like 800 words in one day. The muses talk to me more often nowadays than they used to even a few years ago. So, I'm hopeful. It's just that between these bouts of inspiration, the going is awfully slow, and even if I sit down to write *something*, I often can't do it because I *really* do not know what should come next. I'm currently writing something with an actual plot - I'm not used to plot! - and I have no idea how to get the story going. All I have so far is three - quite nice, if I may say so myself - pages of setting the mood... that's something I'm good at, setting moods. But setting a mood is not enough for a real story.

Ah, sorry for whining. You've hit a nerve there, I guess. ;-)

Feel free to whine anytime. *g* And I wandered over to your site and noticed the preponderance of WIPs, so I fully support your desire to finish what you're in the middle of -- I also have the nasty habit of abandoning things to moulder on my harddrive unfinished. And what I read of yours looked great, so I'll happily harangue you to keep at it!

Additionally -- I love your jewelry. Love it. I'm partial to the gold/silver/acrylic geometric ring and the silver one with the...alexandrite, was it? The green stone. Do you pour casts, or are those all cut and bent? And HOW do you knit those snake-type braids? Anyway, they're fantastic.

Actually... only one story on my site is a WiP, everything else *is* finished. All the other WiPs I have are offline, because not only am I slow, but I also revise my stories obsessively, so posting in instalments is pretty much out of the question - whenever I write a new bit, I first revise the whole story from the beginning - and often that means substantial changes.

I put those short snippets from the WiPs on my website, however, to show people that I haven't stopped writing fic, even if there hasn't been a new story on my website for months.

Thanks for the compliment, btw. I'm currently trying to finish a Farscape WiP that has been tormenting me since January 2003. It's not very good, though - I'm no good at writing John. Oh well, it was just an experiment... and I guess it has taught me to stay away from writing John POV in the future. *g*

>Additionally -- I love your jewelry. Love it. I'm partial to the gold/silver/acrylic geometric ring and the silver one with the...alexandrite, was it?

Tourmaline. I love tourmaline; I rarely work with precious stones, though.

>The green stone. Do you pour casts, or are those all cut and bent?

No casts (except for the cat-shaped ring). All made from silver sheet and silver wire. (Or gold sheet and gold wire, as the case may be.) Sawed, filed, bent, soldered, etc. (Love soldering. I'm a closet pyromaniac.)

>And HOW do you knit those snake-type braids? Anyway, they're fantastic

Well, actually, just like you knit anything else, or rather, crochet. Just with a much smaller needle, and very thin wire. It's really quite simple - good to do on a train, or while watching TV. Although at the moment I'm not so sure I could still do it - I did the last of those *years* ago. *g*

I have somehow got to find the money (and the time) to buy and watch DS9 DVDs. I saw the first three seasons, and most of the last two, but got interrupted in the middle by university. Bah.

Do watch those missing seasons! It's a fabulous show, easily the best Trek. And nicely subversive of the ST universe.

My hubby is starting to get me into DS9 a little bit, now that the repeats are being shown on television. It's nice "discovering" a good, geeky that I somehow missed out on the first time around. (And I sucked him in with my Highlander DVDs, so I suppose it's only fair ;) ... )
