Some people find the habit of writing really short stuff -- 500 word, or even 100 word drabbles -- helpful to getting the muse talking and the creative juices flowing.
I tried it myself, but 100 words is really too short. 500 words is a reasonable length, I mean, you can say something in 500 words, but I can't crank those out with any rapidity either. I need to learn to forget about these pesky complicated time-travel plots and get down to brass tacks. *g*
