What's the word on using Skype for chat? I don't have a microphone, but it works also as a text messenger, doesn't it? Anybody here on it?

you can use to talk to all (or most) of the different IM clients. I prefer it to having half a dozen IM clients installed on my machine, but it does have compatibility issues quite frequently. (There are different multi-messengers, but they all have issues. I'm currently using Pidgin; I've also used Trillian and Miranda.)

I've had good results with Meebo, personally. It's a web page, not a program (although they do have an app for the iphone), so you just log into a meebo account and it launches any messenger programs you have set up.

If you ever do get your multimessenger working again and you sign on to the jabber network with your ljusername@livejournal.com and your LJ password as the password, it'll automatically bring up your flist and I'm online on that most weekend evenings and a lot of evenings in the week too.

I also have Skype and it works quite well as a text chat thing too, though it has a bit of lag. You just right click your contact's name and choose "start chat" instead of "start call". I'm not often on Skype but if you let me know when you'll be online, I can probably be there!

Pidgin doesn't support Jabber, but it does support something called XMPP, which seems to be the same thing? Unfortunately, when I try to sign on using that protocol it asks me for a shitload of info. I don't even know what password to use - the same as my LJ password?

Hey, I didn't even know multi-messengers existed!

Still having problems with my ICQ and Messenger, I've now resorted to using Skype with everyone, as it's the only IM programme that works perfectly for me (my nick is 'silvy75' if you're interested). I'm always on 'invisible' mode to avoid being bothered by some annoying customers, but if you send me a message and I'm in front of my PC, I'll surely answer you. :)

But the multi-messenger seems to work again, at least. Although it keeps giving me weird error messages. But, as long as it works while producing those error messages, who am I to complain...

BTW, it just occurred to me: as I'm back home now, you could possibly send me... stuff! :D

I'll try and reinstall ICQ, then. It never worked very well on my PC, but at least we can chat!

I'll soon prepare a nice package with all the stuff for you. This week is awfully busy workwise and in the weekend I'm going to London to see Phil Glenister at Collectormania (yeah, I know!!!), but I'll sort out the package as soon as I'm back next week, so that I can ship it before the hectic Christmas time begins. :)

I have it (although I don't think it's installed right now), but rarely use it since I know a grand total of one person who uses it. Also I haven't used it in years. But if you get on well with it, let me know and I'll make some kind of attempt to install and use it :)

Fair enough.

I try to remember to sign into MSN on weekends (and if you see me about, even if it says I'm busy or idle, bibble me, because I never am, I just haven't changed the default settings). I'd be on during the week, but that I really don't go on the internet much during the week (with work and all). But yeah, if you see me around, give me a nudge, and I'll try to remember to do the same to you :)
