Farscape does fanfic (12.01.03)

hmpfI’ve always maintained that Farscape must be the most ‘fanficcy’ series there ever was. They did angst with ‘The Choice’, and now they’ve done a coming home fic. Yes, ‘Terra Firma’ was pure and utter fanfic. Oh, don’t worry, it was *good*. It was, in fact, very good, from the lush colours and meditative music and the dreamy quality of the beginning to the moving scenes between John and his family. The only thing that really annoys me is that DK’s death was treated so cavalierly. Still, as I said, it was a very, very good ep.
‘Kansas’ was just good, not *very* good, and it had more elements that slightly annoyed me than ‘Terra Firma’ did. But even ‘Kansas’ was pure fanfic. John talking to his mom; John losing his virginity to Chiana – it doesn’t get much more fanfic than that!
But, back to ‘Terra Firma’, which just may make it into my top ten. John pointing a gun at his father (well, okay, that was actually the end of ‘Kansas) – fanfic. John sitting on the pier writing in his diary – fanfic. Aeryn taking Jack to Saturn – fanfic. Everyone talking to Aeryn about her relationship – fanfic. It being Christmas time – fanfic. Political problem arising from alien technology – fanfic. John talking to his sister – fanfic. All of those are very familiar topoi to a fanfic reader. Ricky Manning certainly knows what fans want to see... no one can tell me that that man has never read a fic.

Looks like I will have to get a Livejournal account if I want to turn up as anything but "Anonymous". Just want to say, the "all about hmpf" section doesn't seem to be working too well for me - clicking on the pictures at the bottom of the screen gives me errors saying it can't find things.
Saw your reaction to TTT. Gotta agree with a lot there, and you mentioned things I didn't notice - "Spotlights at Helm's Deep" for Theodoen putting on his armour. Hee hee. And Merry and Pippin on Treebeard - some distance shots were definitely CG Merry and Pippin. But Gollum made up for that.
The bit where Arwen appears to be leaving Middle Earth though - well, I think that is another PJ feint. (A bit like pretending the hobbits were sleeping in the beds in Bree) - did you notice the look on Elrond's face as she left? It was most definitely NOT HAPPY. He should be looking relieved if she were going to the havens. We didn't see her take the sword, (TTT extended version?) but Aragorn has to get his sword at some point. So I think the "going away" scene was Elrond looking cranky/upset as his daughter (protected by a bunch of Elves, no way she would be allowed to galavant off on her own) is heading off to give Aragorn his sword, not to the havens. But PJ wants to surprise the audience whenever possible.
BTW, the scene where Arwen and the elves leave Rivendell, walking over the bridge - that looked straight out of the final scene of Disney's Fantasia (the orginal one of course, an absolutely brillant piece of art). I was expecting Schubert's Ave Maria to start up.
I also loved the "Olympic Torch Orc"
