Question to people who read 68 Wives
Feb. 1st, 2008 01:18 amI just remembered I initially meant to add an author's note, but I'm not sure it's really necessary (also, it seems kind of late, now that the fic's probably been read by most of the people who will read it), so... tell me about your perceptions/conclusion so I can judge better, perhaps, whether I should add that note or not:
In 68 Wives I mention one 'wife' who was a man, one 'wife' Methos actually wasn't married to, and one wife who was black. Did this lead you, the readers, to assume that Methos only ever loved one man, only ever loved one woman he didn't actually marry (plus Alexa), and only ever married one black woman? Because I did not mean to imply that, and if I accidentally did, I'd be sort of... uncomfortable.

Date: 2008-02-01 11:44 am (UTC)Longer - I thought you were writing about everyone Methos married, thus due to the word "wife" I assumed it was probably the only man he ever married, partly due to the...relative, though not total, absence of gay marriage from large numbers of historical societies, and also due to the word "wife" which made me think that there was, like, trickery or cross-dressing going on or something. Though I suppose it could just be Methos categorising him as one of the wives? Point is, that's what I assumed. Only man he ever married.
I can't say that I made too many thoughts about whether or not he loved other men because it's not a fic about the various people he loved so honestly that wasn't even on my radar reading it. But had someone asked me (even without the leading question above) I'd've said, no, I imagine he loved lots of other people. Also because the large number of women he's married I suppose seems to indicate at least a strong level of heterosexuality. Not to the point that he wouldn't love a man (clearly!) but I guess I figure it was the exception rather than the rule? That there were probably others, but, perhaps only one in sixty-eight? ;) So this fic did make me think of Methos as largely heterosexual but willing to give anything a go at least once; more often if he liked it.
The one he didn't marry, I assumed that there was a reason she had been elevated from "person I loved" to "wife" status. Not that she was the only one ever. I figured there was again, some weird story about how he thought they were married, but it turned out it was never true in the first place, or something.
The black woman - again, no, I assumed that in her instance, that was what he remembered about her the clearest. And that it didn't mean she was the only wife he had who was black any more than it meant the wife who's spine was like a low chain of hills was the only wife who had a spine. Though I quite like that last idea; it makes me giggle in my head!
Today was 'I worry too much' day, I think. *g*
