läßt seine besonderen Gestaltungen auseinanderfallen, denn das Auseinander ist die Form der Natürlichkeit." (Hegel)

What the *frell* does that sentence mean? I know I probably shouldn't get hung up on one sentence, but this one is so devoid of any kind of understandable meaning to my poor limited mind that it just really annoys me. I mean, I could make some sort of sense of the text up until then, but this is where it gets incomprehensible to me. And no, I can't translate it into English - to translate it, I would have to understand it at least a little bit.

It appears to be a discussion of the tendancy of systems to favour increasing degrees of randomness..... strangely appropriate given that you don't think it makes that much sense :)

not sure what you're reading, but for the phenomenology i adore kojeve's introduction to the reading of hegel he has a particular reading that gives hegel a more humanist bent, but he basically taught every single post-war french philiopger or their teachers. for me as a postmodernist, he's the quick and dirty route to hegel :D [well, to the phenomenogy] ...actually, i also really liked habermas's reading in der philosophische diskurs der moderne, but again, more for an english person like me...i'm sure straight up philosophers would rec some other readings...

what class are you reading it for?

Äh... habe ich schon mal erwähnt, dass ich von sowas Kopfweh bekomme?
Keinen Schimmer, wie ich Dir da helfen könnte, außer: Häng Dich nicht an einem Satz auf! *g*

Also http://babel.altavista.com/tr doesn't really understand the sentence but translates it anyway:

The spirit, which dresses into this way of the naturalness, lets its special organizations fall apart, because the apart is the form of the naturalness

*surprised*
Hey, what happened to those automatic online translators that made the funniest random arrangements of words?! They managed to translate a sentence like "Die Katze ist in der Kueche./The cat is in the kitchen." into something totally random.
This is not a proper translation (I guess...I hope! ;) ) but it's so close to the original version that it's still frighteningly confusing.
*disappointed*

Heh heh heh! This is what I expected (you just have to translate in repeatedly):

El alcohol, que viste en esta manera del naturalness, deja sus organizaciones especiales bajar aparte, porque el separado es la forma del naturalness

L'alcool, qu'il habille dans cette manière du naturalness, laisse ses organisations spéciales baisser de côté, parce que ce qui est séparé est la forme du naturalness

Der Alkohol, den er in dieser Art des naturalneß ausstattet, läßt seine speziellen Organisationen sinken um seitens, weil was getrennt ist, die Form des naturalneß ist

Did I help you to understand Hegel? *g*
Prost!

Oh...and back in English it's:

The alcohol, which he equips in this kind naturalness, lets sink its special organizations over on the part of, because which is separate, the form naturalness is

Not really.

But thanks anyway. ;-)

Just this one short excerpt - and I don't feel like expanding my knowledge at the moment!

It was a class in American history, and the Hegel bit referred to the western expansion.

Heh. It's nice to see you around here. :-) I still need to catch up with your LJ, but yours, I must admit, is one of the few I've been really afraid of: there's so much substance there, I fear it may take me months to really catch up! Maybe I should just jump in at the present point, instead of trying to catch up with everything...

Jo, ich weiß...
