I am truly too stupid to live. Turns out I had created the odd files that 'suddenly' turned up on my webspace myself, in the process of password-protecting my directories (a process that's still new to me). So, no hack, thank god. I'll still do *another* very thorough scan of my system with every security software I have (Antivir, Comodo, AdAware and Malwarebytes), but I think I freaked prematurely, this time. Once bitten, etc.
