(an open letter)

Hello Scapers.

I have some suggestions on how we may proceed now that the euphoria of last week's constant media coverage on our effort wears off.

Whatever beef some of you may have with Barb, she's right in one thing: we're in this for the long haul.

I know it hurts to realize this, and I know the publicity we got last week made it easy to delude ourselves to the effect that we would succeed quickly, but the bitter truth we need to face is, no matter how much fuss we made in one week, that is not enough to convince the execs at Scifi. We're still only a small segment of the audience to them, and they probably still think we will forget about this in a few weeks.

And there is indeed the danger that we may, or rather, that we give up hope and stop working towards our goal because it seems unreachable.

Other shows *have* been brought back by fan campaigns that sometimes lasted years and at the very least lasted months. It took the Save Star Trek campaign in the sixties months to save the show for one more season; it took them years to get a movie. I think we should keep this in mind and get ready for a long campaign.

There are three things now we need to do:

1.) Keep up writing to UPN, Showtime, probably even Scifi; keep up signing petitions, going to rallies, printing and distributing flyers; those daily To Do Lists at savefarscape.com are a great way to keep that concentrated effort going!

2.) We must *not* let this community fall apart when the media coverage wanes.

I have found I can actually fight on without a lot of hope. I can't say I have no hope at all anymore, but the hope I have is small and distant. Still, I will keep fighting, systematically and continuously, and I hope you all will, too. I know I am one of the more fanatical people around (although most international Scapers probably don't know me, as I'm mostly active in German FS fandom) and I think we, the most fanatical fans ;-) need to keep the flame burning, in a manner of speaking, and motivate others to also keep fighting in the weeks and months to come.

It may be a good idea to find a few Scapers in your area (via the global directory or the chat room) and start a circle that meets once a week, or once a fortnight, or once a month to watch Farscape... I've been a member of such a circle for a year now, and it's great fun! And it should help to keep us all together and motivated. We also have Farscape Weekends here in Germany, where we meet for a weekend to watch lots of Farscape. Farscape is hardly ever on the air here, and this has been a great way for people to catch up with the newest episodes (and apparently also a good way to establish the fandom - last I checked the Fanscape Enumerator, German FS fandom was the largest non-English speaking group, although the show has been off the air for quite a while here and has just been finally cancelled by the network that was carrying it here.)

3.) Find new 'converts'!

Now this is the main reason I am posting this. I think we need to really spread Farscape and not just the news of its cancellation.

Star Trek fandom grew while the show was cancelled. I've heard people claim we are the trekkers of the new millennium. Well, let us *be* the trekkers of the new millennium! We need new fans, more fans! I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is also active in other fandoms. Generally fannish people are often open to giving a show they haven't seen yet a chance. And Farscape has a way to even convince some non-fannish people to watch, in my experience. So recommend the show to everyone, and give people a chance to see it!

So, if you've started a circle for watching Farscape, invite people over who haven't had much (or any) exposure to Farscape yet... or let them borrow your tapes or DVDs. Spread the show. I have recently given my CDs (downloaded, but I'm getting the DVDs now) to a guy I met at a Tolkien fan meeting, and he and a friend of his are now big fans of Farscape; one of them watched 67 eps in 12 days! Then, when you've made some 'converts', you can enlist them for our efforts! :-)

Scape on - now more than ever!

Hmpf MacSlow

PS: Feel free to spread this to any board, forum, mailing list or newsgroup you frequent that has a few Scapers! :-)

In the non-FS news department: although I only went to bed at 6:30 a.m. today this actually was the first day in a long while that I actually got a few things done. I worked on the rings I'm making for Claudia, and started sifting through my notes for the first paper I'm to write for uni... so, I don't feel as guilty about devoting so much time to FS today as I did the rest of the week. Let's see if I can keep up this new trend of being effective on both sides of my life for a while...

Ben *will* be on CNN HLN in about an hour.

There is no news yet of the meeting that was supposed to have taken place yesterday. The only thing we know is that Barb told us in chat that things are looking bad at Scifi.

A few scapers went to a talkshow today in Save Farscape t-shirts and were filmed extensively!

Oh, and I think you should head over here if you're a Scaper: http://www.quanfu-cafe.com/index.php
hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)
First of all, you need to disregard this article: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/020916/1/32ss3.html -- it is old news rehashed as new, may even be completely bogus, we don't know - and although it does look bad - probably very bad - for Farscape on Scifi, at this moment nothing is written in stone yet.

A Sydney newspaper that printed the same bit of news made this public later this day: >>FARSCAPE update: at the time Sydney Confidential went to press, Farscape producers were having a meeting in New York with the heads of the Sci-Fi channel. We'll keep you posted on the outcome.<<

***A word about our effort***:
We think we may need to continue this campaign for a while, possibly a long while. This has the potential to become the Star Trek Campaign of the new millennium, but for that to become true, we need to keep the pressure up, we need to keep the letters coming, even without such good news as in the last days. We must not give up.

Some of the great folks at http://www.savefarscape.com (formerly known as farscape.wdsection.com) have started a habit of assigning 'homework' to Scapers every day. The 'homework' is a To Do List for every day, detailing who to target on that day and how to target them, making it easier for us to decide what to do every day. If you want to participate in this, you can either head over to savefarscape.com every day, or you could also join the savefarscape announcement list at yahoogroups. Here's a link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SaveFarscapeAnnouncements/join

The task for Monday and Tuesday is this: http://divinecollective.bitchenvy.com/IAmFarscape.html

Also, you should take a moment to help the Farscape Fanscape Enumeration: http://farscape.noidea.us/ fanscape/ - This is a project that tries to determine the audience demographics of Farscape for use in letters and in trying to sell the show to other networks. Please be truthful, so it will be as accurate as possible.

I suspect one of the next 'homeworks' will be 'selling' the show to other networks, most probably UPN and Showtime. If you want to write them letters - and I think that would be a really good idea! - you can find the necessary contact info here: http://farscape.wdsection.com/newnets.htmls - Mention shows you are watching on their network and tell them why you think Farscape would be a good addition to their program.

As unusual ways of helping the show out go, this is also quite... uhm... Oh, check it out for yourself. The Farscape Fund: http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/FarscapeFund/ - Sounds immensely silly at first, but if you read their explanation, it actually does make sense.

Another petition - the biggest one: http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/SAVE_FARSCAPE
This has over 30.000 signatures.

Last but not least, Ben Browder may be on CNN Headline News Tuesday night. We don't know yet.

As always, for more information head over to: http://www.savefarscape.com (formerly farscape.wdsection.com)

Oh, and if you need some convincing why you should even bother doing all this - Caitlin R. Kiernan, comics writer and novelist, has some very good reasons for you: http://www.revolutionsf.com/article/ 1421.html
http://www.sfsite.com/09b/far136.htm0

I'm sure I've forgotten something here, but I can't think straight anymore (it's past 5 a.m. here)... Anyway. Any help anyone here can offer is greatly appreciated. Nothing is lost yet if we keep fighting.

That describes my feelings on Sunday when I found out just perfectly. (Except for the bit about self-worth. My self-worth is not connected to Farscape. However, the shattering experience is spot-on.)

No big update here. There was a rally in Atlanta today, 45 people turned up, but they didn't get to talk to anyone at CNN nor leave a card for Mr. San Miguel. Oh well, but they'll try again on Tuesday.

Scifi has left us a letter you can read here:

http://www.scifi.com/farscape/includes/message.html

Oh, and we had ads in Variety and in the Sydney Daily Telegraph:

Andrew Prowse, director and producer for Farscape, had this to say in reply to our ad in the Sydney Daily Telegraph:

>>Anthony Simcoe rushed into my office this morning waving The Daily Telegraph, "Look at this, look at this!". I looked and saw your ad, maybe a third of a page: "To the Farscape Cast and Crew". I copied it, handed it round to the post-production crew. Some smiled in appreciation, others shook their heads in disbelief, a couple looked a little red around the eyes: all were touched.
We know Farscape is a special show; at its best a great show, and hope the hell other people think the same. We know we have fans out there who love what we do. But I don't think any of us could have imagined the passion; the strength and depth of support we've received over the last ten days. It makes us proud, and it makes us humble.
We haven't given up yet, and neither should you.
We believe in you too.

Andrew Prowse
PRODUCER & DIRECTOR<<

(The last line of the Sydney ad was: 'We believe in you.')

Also, a writer at IGN is trolling against us, telling us to just give up and accept FS is dead. But I'm not going to post a link here and give him the satisfaction of increasing hits on his site. *g*

Luckily, most of the media are on our side, sort of. This is what Renay San Miguel and his colleagues said yesterday:

Renay: "I would think that advertisers would jump all over that demographic."

Cathy: "I would think so, yeah."

Steve: "Those are eyeballs they really want."

Renay: "Yeah. And if Farscape doesn't come back, come on over to Hotwired and Headline News, we'll take ya."

*g*
hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)
This is a new development: Anthony Simcoe, who plays D'Argo on Farscape, was in chat just now and told us some kind of big decision will be taken on Monday at Scifi. There's a meeting scheduled.

So, we have to make an impression till then.

That means send e-mail, faxes and possibly, if you're within the U.S. even letters as soon as possible (and as much as possible) to inundate their offices with signs of our protest again.

Also, yesterday was the day the ad in the Sydney paper addressed to the cast and crew was scheduled. Here's the text:

To the Farscape Cast and Crew
We are touched by life and the people we know. In return, we touch the
lives of others by the things we do, who we are.
Occasionally, who we are reaches beyond the ordinary to give a glimpse of
the extraordinary. To offer a remarkable vision.
Farscape is more than a heroes’ journey. It is the story of each of us. It is
an experience of wonder, a quest for family, a renewal of hope. A realization
that we are more than we knew.
Everyone can be their own kind of hero.
This is your gift: to envision the story and bring it to life. A moving story filled
with love, and trials, and tears. You imagine a universe and invite us to
believe.
We do. We believe in you.

>>Anthony Simcoe rushed into my office this morning waving The Daily Telegraph, "Look at this, look at this!". I looked and saw your ad, maybe a third of a page: "To the Farscape Cast and Crew". We've been on CNN Headline news again. Twice, which makes a total of four short reports on the FS situation in the last two days. I should add Renay San Miguel (CNN Hotwired anchor) to my list of heroes cause he treats us with great respect - no sneering at geeks at all, and he's in fact asking us to keep the campaign up! They also said something to the effect that they're reporting on our campaign because they think it could rival the legendary Save Star Trek campaign of the 1960s.

We are Scapers. Hear us roar!

Hehe.

something nicely inspiring by Barbarella, just now in chat:

[04:11] this is not just a weeks campaign
[04:11] we need you all here..and everyone you can bring for months
[04:11] at the very minimum thru January and really I'd like to see us here thru the episodes and beyond..we will NOT give up fighting for our 5th season

[04:13] we are going to intelligently win this campaign just as we have been winning
[04:13] and believe me folks...we ARE winning
[04:13] there has never been a fan campaign like this
[04:14] you didn't see alot of fan campaigns in the news
[04:14] nor have you seen cancelations being announced FAR earlier than would have been their choice

[04:15] we have to continue putting pressure on EM TV and Scifi to negotiate some sort of deal
[04:15] and continue to go to other networks saying we will follow our show anywhere
[04:15] and we are legion
[04:15] they'll want us
[04:15] we already have at least 30,000 people involved in this movement
[04:15] and more every day

[04:21] this will take months but we WILL win
[04:22] we have been wining this thing
[04:22] and I won't take no for an answer and I expect you guys not to either

That is, as I am told, not exactly CNN, but close enough. Apparently it was a positive note about our effort, with a quote/interview/blurb from Matt Roush, critic from TVGuide.

[ Just in: download the clip here: http://www.alligan.co.uk//CNN%20FS%20Stream.rm ]

I've spent the day spreading flyers to comicshops and fantasy bookshops in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Now I'm writing letters and preparing packages of flyers for at least four other major German cities, and waiting in the scifi channel farscape chat for an announcement from moderator/activist Barbarella... And did I mention we were just on CNN Headline News?!?!

A little list of heroes:

- David Kemper, Ricky Manning, and Ben Browder, for coming into chat and telling us, last Friday, despite Scifi's intentions to leave us uninformed till March. (Wanna read the transcript? http://farscape.wdsection.com/dkchattrans.html)

- everybody who's created a Save Farscape website after last Friday

- Barbarella, who's even spent most of her birthday moderating the farscape chat and coordinating our efforts, and who's declared she's even missed sex for us! *g*

- AnduraNova and Dashan who helped me make the flyers.

- Caitlin R. Kiernan for writing wonderful articles about why it's not just okay, but a really good idea to fight for Farscape. Go here:

Here's what our beloved DK ;-) had to say in chat sometime yesterday night:

<@DK> Thought I'd check in.
<@DK> Ben called this morning to say someone was in here blabbing
<@DK> about this and that. Wasn't me. I was at the chiropractor, trying
to unkink from the wrap party last night
<@DK> Anyway. Point is--
<@DK> Two points, actually
<@DK> and you may be highly interested in both.
<@DK> 1) When someone purports to be
<@DK> me or Ben, there is a way to check.
<@DK> Barb and I have a secret password.
<@DK> If he has the password
<@DK> He's me.
<@DK> If he doesn't
<@DK> She'll let you know.
<@DK> Anyone in the whole wide world can log
<@DK> on as me and say things that aren't true.
<@DK> Don't believe it.
<@DK> This IS me. I can tell you a few things.
<@DK> Ben and Claudia and Lil and Andrew and Deb and Baba and I ended the
<@DK> wrap party in my office and talked and cried the night away.
<@DK> I got home very late/early
<@DK> and my phone was ringing.
<@DK> The pressure you incredible people are applying
<@DK> through civil and concerned means
<@DK> is
<@DK> unbelievably as you may find it
<@DK> actually having an effect.
<@DK> There are no promises.
<@DK> There is no anything.
<@DK> But people who were once not talking
<@DK> are now talking again.
<@DK> My phone rings.
<@DK> There is calm and there is conversation.
<@DK> While people are decent and sensible
<@DK> and interacting in a positive and productive
<@DK> way, things ALWAYS have a chance to get done.
<@DK> I am the most optimistic person you've
<@DK> ever heard about. It's what I do.
<@DK> I am hopeful.
<@DK> I am seriously hopeful.
<@DK> It is because of you.
<@DK> But it is nowhere near being done.
<@DK> That said,
<@DK> I am hopeful.
<@DK> Now....
<@DK> What to do?
<@DK> First -- do not listen to DK this and DK that.
<@DK> he ain't me.
<@DK> Once again,
<@DK> this IS me.
<@DK> I am hopeful.
<@DK> Frankly, I'm so thrilled
<@DK> by all of your support.
<@DK> It's all the cast and crew
<@DK> talked about
<@DK> on a difficult last day.
<@DK> I read Matt Roush's
<@DK> fabulous on-line obit for us
<@DK> everyone on wrap.
<@DK> We all cried.
<@DK> 200 plus people. I swear to you. We ALL cried.
<@DK> Together.
<@DK> You fans are great.
<@DK> Keep it up.
<@DK> Keep letting the world know you want to see
<@DK> more Farscape.
<@DK> It's like pre-booking
<@DK> your seat at a movie.
<@DK> If they know you will watch
<@DK> they will make the product for you.
<@DK> "Hope" is a word
<@DK> you will find in all of my scripts.
<@DK> I give it to Crichton whenever I can.
<@DK> I always have hope.
<@DK> Yesterday I had less hope.
<@DK> Today I had more.
<@DK> You get the idea.
<@DK> Specifics don't matter.
<@DK> We're taking a breather today.
<@DK> Nothing to write for Farscape for the first time
<@DK> since Oct 17, 1997.
<@DK> First night I went to be without a story or an arc
<@DK> or a new character in my head.
<@DK> A peaceful night's sleep.
<@DK> I FRELLING HATED IT.
<@DK> Keep it up.
<@DK> I'll get back to you
<@DK> HERE, in this room
<@DK> If and when things progress or die down.
<@DK> In the meantime
<@DK> Please understand how important you are to us.
<@DK> Spread the word that calm
<@DK> reasoned
<@DK> rational
<@DK> PASSIONATE
<@DK> expressions
<@DK> of dismay are appropriate.
<@DK> They are helpful.
<@DK> They work.
<@DK> I'm done, Barb.
<@DK> Just wanted to set the
<@DK> record straight re: the imposter today.

Gotta love the guy. Frell, I love them all. With FS, I really don't just love the product, I love the whole crew. Now more than ever.

So, what else to tell you... the amount of acitivity everywhere is quite unbelievable. Yesterday night I made flyers for comicshops in the area with two friends from the list. We're going to distribute them to comicshops and other fannish shops in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, maybe also Mannheim, today. Try and make more people write letters.

Well, it's only a small thing, but I think we can call this our first success: wonderful scifi chat mod Barbarella who has taken it upon herself to organize our protest to some degree, and is keeping us up to date on news directly from scifi has told us this:

our efforts are working

we MUST stay united

This is a great article - I found it linked in a blog linked from Neil Gaiman's blog. Neil Gaiman is the author of the Sandman comics I adore. Anyway, this article is by another comics writer and novelist and it is explaining very well why even people who aren't die-hard Farscape fans should consider sending a letter. Very good thoughts there. Check it out.
hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)
Too tired to post anything coherent. I'll let 'The Big Guy' (someone high up, may be Rockne or Froon or DK, who knows) speak for me:

"Everybody's got to keep the pressure on hard and heavy -- and without winding down. I believe what Sci-Fi Channel is counting on is that fans will squeal for a few weeks, swear they hate the Sci- Fi Channel, but when the mini-series Taken airs in a couple of months, and the series version of Tremors premieres in January, the fans will sample them anyway, and just sort of forget about Farscape. I'd hate to see their cavalier treatment of sf fans triumph.

Some have thought a good idea would be to call their cable company and cancel their subscriptions to Sci-Fi. YES! Do this - and say WHY you are doing it when you call. (Then re-order JUST before they air the end of Season 4 and SAY WHY YOU ARE ORDERING). This will make a great impression.

Keep writing, faxing and calling! You guys are amazing!- Very High Up Source"

Or, I could let DK speak for me:

"[DK] We are all hugely sad.
[DK] I am shaking as I write this.
[DK] Yesterday, we all cried on the set.
[DK] Yet, as we are, at the end of the line
[DK] so to speak
[DK] being just the people who make the show
[DK] and not the corporate entities that fund and air it
[DK] we are as helpless as anyone.
[DK] And we are sad
[DK] And we are shattered.
[DK] And we are sorry.
[DK] And we wanted to come online
[DK] and talk to YOU,
[DK] our core fans who have stood
[DK] beside us for such a long and great journey."

Damn, shouldn't have posted that. Now I'm crying again.

I could also let Mr. Roush from TV Guide, an influential TV critic (so I'm told) speak for me:

"This decision is likely to be compared years from now to NBC's short-sighted cancellation of the original Star Trek after a mere three seasons."

What else can I say? Petitions are up to 14.000 or more signatures now, we are all writing letters like mad (12 here, today, plus countless e-mails, spending a frelling fortune on postage). There's probably going to be a protest at the SciFi Channel's offices in New York, too.

Please, if you can take the time, write a letter or two to the people responsible for this decision (that would be mostly Michael Jackson of the Scifi Channel - here's his address:

Actually, I think we should really concentrate our efforts on Showtime now. They seem to be a somewhat unconventional network, and they are the only network that has openly expressed an interest in buying Farscape. I think we should start flodding them with letters!

Frell, I can't concentrate anymore. Need to go to bed, sleep a bit... tomorrow I need to be in 'full working order' again... I have so much stuff for university to do, and that stuff won't go away just because I'm sad...

Hi everyone who reads this journal - I'm desparate, and I need your help. Farscape, the show around which my emotional life has been revolving for the last one and a half years, has been cancelled. Only those of you who've had their favourite show cancelled before can understand what that means. At the moment, it means I'm a nervous wreck sitting at my computer taking turns crying and writing mails. I'm actually too distraught to write a coherent entrz here, but I need you help, so I'll just post the appeal I just mailed to everybody here:

Hi everybody,

some of you probably already know this, and some of you probably don't care all that much, but most of you - not all - are to some degree fannish people and may understand the desperation of a fan whose show has been cancelled.

The day before yesterday Farscape, which was regarded by many the best scifi show currently on the air, has been cancelled. Yes, that´s right, a show that has won awards left right and center, that the critics have on more than one occasion raved about and that has a fast growing fandom even in countries where it is not currently on the air, has been cancelled. Not that it´s been the first time that a great show has been cancelled prematurely... this is the kind of thing that reminds me of all the things that are wrong with 'the system'... ;-) (grinning under tears here)

So, why this mail? Because it´s only been a few dozen hours since the cancellation and Rock and co. are imploring us to write letters, and, well, I figured I´d just send this appeal who might even in the remotest way be interested in Farscape...

So. Some of you are close friends of mine; some of you are fans (maybe not as fanatical as I, but still fans) of the show, and some of you are just general fannish people who may feel some solidarity with this newly-deprived fan. Now, *if* you could find the time to write an e-mail or - better yet - a letter to one or all of the addresses below, we *might* have a chance. I'm not saying there's a big chance, but for us to have *any* kind of chance, we need *lots* of letters. And faxes. And e-mails. So please do me the favour and devote a tiny little bit of your time to tell the Scifi-Channel that Farscape is a frelling great show whose story arc deserves to be finished instead of left hanging after season four. If you can write to both SciFi and EM-TV (who own Henson), that would of course be best, but if you don't want to devote that much time, just write to the SciFi-Channel. Please, if you can find the time, write a letter and not just an e-mail, because letters - handwritten, if possible - count the most. It won't take much of your time, but it might just give one piece of quality TV the chance it deserves.

Do I have to kneel down and beg? ;-)

Thanks.

Hmpf - distraught in Frankfurt

PS: If you don't want to write a letter, even a postcard might do.

An die ganzen englischen Adressen ruhig mehrmals schreiben/faxen/mailen. Die
kriegen bestimmt soviel Post, dass es nicht auffällt wenn etwas doppelt ist.
Und dann macht es natürlich die Masse.

(Feel free to send multiple mails/letters/faxes to the Adresses. They probably get enough mail so that they won't notice. Quantity counts.)

Außerdem:
- Nicht wild beschimpfen
- Briefe/Faxe mit Hand schreiben
- Andere Leute in Foren / anderen Fan-Communities mobilisieren
- An Presse schreiben

(Furthermore:
-Do not swear/insult etc.
-write by hand
-mobilize other fan communities
-inform the press)
