Books will be the death of me...
Apr. 4th, 2004 02:57 amBought another one. City of Saints and Madmen by this guy, 'cause it tickles my fancy for Books That Are Places and because the cover is stunningly beautiful. And I still had a "2 pounds off" voucher.
Be sure to visit VanderWorld.
Need. To learn. To control. This habit.
Oh, and for those of you who were so kind as to cross their fingers for my job hunting yesterday: it was a strange day, with no very conclusive results. Some people told me the times were bad for jobs in the jewellery trade, others said they might have work for me. A couple of designers said they may have a little bit (a very little bit, but it's better than nothing) of work for me - translating something to German and possibly also doing some goldsmith's work. But on the whole, I think, it looks relatively bad. Apparently one of the biggest companies just closed down and now everybody is looking for a job. :-(

Date: 2004-04-04 12:39 pm (UTC)Sounds like a plan.
Date: 2004-04-04 01:01 pm (UTC)Waterstones, btw, are evil. Especially their '3 for 2' offers. And their discount vouchers.
You know, I've just tried to count the books I bought this year...
Date: 2004-04-04 01:15 pm (UTC)For uni:
- Archaeological Resource Management
- Stonehenge Complete
- Digging Up the Past
- The Archaeology of Death and Burial
Comics:
- 5 trade paperbacks of 'Finder'
- Watchmen
- 1 volume of 'Raven's Children'
Other books:
- Celtic and Anglo Saxon Art
- Tolkien - a cultural phenomenon
- Michael Moore: Stupid White Men
- Nick Hornby: Fever Pitch
- Orhan Pamuk: My Name is Red
- Michael Chabon: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
- M. John Harrison: Viriconium
- Jeff VanderMeer: City of Saints and Angels
Not to mention the books I bought last term, and the old books I 'rescued' from the SF-soc library. When I get back to Germany, I'll have to invest in a new bookcase. It was already running over when I left. (http://www.allabouthmpf.com/books.htm - and that's really only about two thirds of it.)
I can control this habit slightly better in Germany, as I prefer reading English and there simply aren't that many English books to tempt me in Germany. There are three English bookshops where I live, but they have a rather small selection, and the stuff I like tends to be not the bestselling stuff. So, I find it easier to keep my money together and my bookcase from overcrowding when I'm back home. But here, every visit to Waterstones or Borders, with those huge selections of sf and fantasy... how am I supposed to resist? They have all the books I've been dreaming of for years!

Date: 2004-04-04 03:08 pm (UTC)No kidding. I have two lots of vouchers, no money, and a stack of books I want. Especially the learning Japanese ones.
I think we should inform the world of this great evil before it's too late!

Date: 2004-04-05 03:38 pm (UTC)No worries about the not meeting. It means I can give it to you at C5 and make you feel incredibly embarrassed in front of everyone (or if you're not, I will be!). Plus it'll give me more time to get more ink for my printer (I kinda ran it out doing a LotR montage, which you'll also see at C5).
