hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)

Yay me.

I *did* skip out on uni, though. Anyway, read almost a whole book for one of my essays today, will get back to it with a cup of fresh brewed tea in a minute, and get the rest done.

Oh, and more news of Hmpf the successful student: did I ever mention that embarrassing essay I wrote in only two days that I thought was the worst thing I'd ever written? Well, I got a 67 on that. That's actually a pretty good grade. Had to LOL when I heard! (I still think it's the worst thing I've ever written.)

So... the first essay I wrote here in Britain I thought was pretty decent, and it got a 68. The second one I thought was pretty shitty, and it got a 67. The third one I thought was pretty brilliant, but I don't know yet what the prof thought. If that *also* gets something in the upper sixties range, I will have to start to question the standards by which I judge my own work... *g*

Edited to add: it just occurred to me that there's a pattern here. If 'pretty good' in my essays equals 68, and 'pretty shitty' equals 67, then 'pretty brilliant' will probably turn out 69. Hmm... if that theory will hold up...?

Is that on a 1-100 scale?

Sort of.

Theoretically, yes. But apparently anything over 80 is rare in the extreme. The grades are grouped thus:

"First": 70-100

"2.1": 60-69

"2.2": 50-59

"3": 40-49

"Fail": 0-39

So, I'm in the 2.1 range. I suppose you could say that's a '2' in the German system.

Reminds me of my school

Reminds me of my school. We had one teacher whose motto was (his own words IIRC!)

"15 is for God. 14 is for me."

That's referring to the 15-point system in K12 and K13.
Although he was the only one who said it that explicitly, other teachers subscribed to this motto, too. Sometimes we had tests where there simply was no result above 12 points. I always found that unfair. This is not how it's supposed to work. Setting up a test where the highest score is basically unachievable without knowing the exact words your teachers wants to hear, is an abuse of the teacher's powers. In those tests I was often sure that even another teacher of the same subject, had s/he participated anonymously would not have received maximal points, and this is absurd. A school should not require a level of expertise from students that its own staff does not have. You should get a top score for being an excellent student, not for being better than the teachers.

Of course, the thing that really infuriated me was when in order to get 15 points you had to be teacher's pet (IMHO the German word "Schleimer" is a much better term), since that completely ruled me out as teachers always had kind of a hate-love relationship with me. They loved me for being a good student, but hated me for leaving out no opportunity of correcting and criticizing them, not to mention asking questions they couldn't answer :-)
