hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)

First two parts of a series on climate and food:

Part 1

Part 2 - this is particularly interesting if you, like my mother, think that "we'll just move everything north (or south) a bit."

I know, I know, here I go posting terrifying stuff again without offering you any clear option of how to fight this problem (aside from the obvious, individual lifestyle choices that don't do much to fight that horrible feeling of impotence.) That's bad motivational technique; I know. But, I haven't found the perfect organisation, the perfect project, the perfect course of action yet.

So the only action I can offer you, for now, is to do what I'm doing: get informed and keep informed and spread what you find out; and take whatever chances that offer themselves to you to influence the people around you as well as those 'higher up'. I think the most important thing for all of us to do is to put pressure on politicians now; this means that there needs to be an unmistakable, highly visible popular movement. So far, this movement has not quite crystallised, although there are pockets of activity here and there. 350.org is one possible future crystallisation point.

If you're in the U.S., and specifically, anywhere near Washington, you may want to join protesters on March 2 at the Capitol Power Plant. Here's why. Here's details.

ETA: You could also attend Powershift 09, also on that weekend, also in Washington, which is less about spectacular public action and more about lobbying. I think we need both. (There's also an 'Idealist Job Fair' event there, apparently. Heh. Shame I'm not in Washington. I mean, this *is* the year I'm supposed to enter the workforce... *g*)

If you're in Germany, you may want to check out campact.de for forms of activism that are compatible even with a very busy lifestyle. ;-) Obviously, we're going to need other forms of activism, too, but it's a start.

But mainly, really, get informed, and get thinking. Maybe *you* are going to be the one who'll come up with the big, decisive idea that's been lacking so far?! ;-)
