I think I find this 'story' (it isn't, really, is it?) so acutely embarrassing because the flaws (of which there are plenty) are, although in this case quite intentional, also pretty much mine. I.e. this is how I would write if I were a little less aware of my weaknesses. This is how I did write, before experience taught me to pay special attention to certain things. And I suspect some of these flaws still crop up in my writing. (This applies only to the style, mind. The logical holes in the argument are due to Sam's personal blind spots, which are not identical with mine.)
I think I'm kind of terrified that people may mistake this for an example of my idea of good writing, when it really is an example of intentional bad writing.
