To watch someone you used to know as an at least *marginally* sane person (for a value of 'sane' that includes permanent fannish obsession, of course) fall ever deeper into crazy tinhattery?

You're falling into tinhattery? About what? Global climate change? At least you're a) doing something about it rather than simply sitting at home covered in tinfoil and b) it's tinhattery supported by many fine scientific minds.

Unless, of course, you're falling into a type of tinhattery I've utterly failed to notice or I missed the point and you're not talking about yourself...?
