hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (meta)

In view of some of the recent discussions about the new direction LJ may or may not be taking, I've created a backup account for myself over at greatestjournal. I don't plan to use it unless the situation at LJ gets dramatically worse or the whole of fandom decides to emigrate to greatestjournal, but just in case, here's the URL:

http://hmpf.greatestjournal.com/

Feel free to friend me there if you have an account there, too. I think I'm going to put some of my more memorable/interesting entries from the past four years up there - sort of a streamlined version of my LJ's archive, without the bits of personal angst and ramblings.

The 2000 user pictures per account are a really nice feature, btw... *g*

ETA: Right. I've just decided that I'll do semi-regular updates there, comprised of some of the more 'relevant' bits of my LJ, probably sorted by months and possibly themes (e.g. I may do a post for my old Farscape episode reactions or something like that). It will be mostly fannish stuff, and occasionally some personal stuff that seems to have some bearing on my fannishness. At the moment, there's a selection from June 2002 there, my first month on LJ. Nothing particularly interesting there yet.

Are there any reasonably short and informative accounts of what the current hubbub is actually about?

I seriously don't have the slightest idea of what's going on with LJ at the moment; just noticed several people on my flist preparing for some kind of mass evacuation.

Surely there must be some bigger reason behind this than just the newly screwed-up improved "customize" section.

I don't really know, either.

I've read part of some of the incredibly long panic threads linked everywhere, and it seems some/a lot of people are seeing signs that Six Apart may want to introduce a fairly extreme change in direction for Livejournal sometime in the near future, and that as a result of that LJ may crash and burn. I hope it's only collective hysteria, but I've been part of enough sites and communities (crosswinds, f2s.com, delphi forums, etc.) that looked like they'd always be around and then very suddenly weren't, anymore, so I've learned not to trust in the longevity of internet companies too much. Can't hurt to start 'cloning' the fannish infrastructure now, as it's a fairly complex structure and would/will probably take months to rebuild elsewhere at least, if LJ were to suddenly disappear or something.

Dahahaha. I have a journal on there for if LJ throws a hissy fit. Weirdly enough, it hasn't done since I gave them money...*ponders this*...

Anyway, will go friend, because you are my friend. LOL. Yeah. I'm making a whole load of sense this morning, aren't I?

Also yes, 2000 user icons = love. Although I think I only have a few up there, which is distressing...

I'm not too frightened.

At the very least I expect LJ will give us some notice if they introduce any fundamental changes. But, it can't hurt to be prepared for the worst.
