as a proper grown-up, I should put the instrument down NOW, before I fall more in love with it, and hide it in a cupboard until after I'm done with my Ph.D. at least.

'Hobbies', not hobbies, because in my mind they're never just hobbies. But they should be, because I'm a grown-up with a job and a Ph.D. to write and stuff, and anything else *should* be secondary, tertiary or even further down the list of priorities.
