First week

The town is mindbendingly romantic. It's like living in a Disney movie.

There are no supermarkets. At all.

And shops tend to close reaaaaaalllly early.

Doing my grocery shopping here will take careful planning. :-(

It feels strange to be able to say "my office".

It feels strange to sit on "the other side" - with the staff - during the introduction for new students.

There are countless cafés. (So, I guess, if I should continue to be unable to find a proper supermarket, I could just go and eat in cafés every day.)

My dad's laptop (well, it's mine, now) has some incredibly annoying "features". Maybe it's Windows 7, maybe it's the fact that the browser is Firefox, maybe it's the *frelling* weird touchpad, maybe it's some presets my dad made. I have to find out if I can change some of these things, but I'm always so exhausted when I come "home".

Speaking of "home" - I'm still moving from hotel to holiday apartment to holiday apartment, never staying longer than two days in any one place. It's not exactly the most relaxing way of living, but I'm not really looking forward to next week's change, either: then I'll be moving into my own flat, but until the 19th I'll still be mostly without furniture and other things. I'll have a mattress and a table and a chair, and maybe a couple of pots and so on. Yay.

At work, I still feel cripplingly inadequate. Not good. I need a better attitude; I'm surrounded by efficient and positive people; I need to fit in.

It's also raining a lot, and I forgot my umbrella, and so far haven't managed to actually get to a shop where I could buy one at a time when that shop was still open. As I already mentioned, shops close early here. Today the rain is particularly bad, feels like an ocean falling from the sky at the moment, and I'm frelling hungry. With that rain, I'd have to swim to the next café or restaurant. Wish I had some food here...

I've found a program which downloads youtube videos in quite decent quality. I have a laptop with lots of free disc space... I suspect this may not be a very healthy combination.

Thanks to the aforementioned annoying "features" of my new laptop, typing this entry took more than half an hour. I think I won't be posting all that much, in the near future.

We do too have supermarkets. Lots. (Several of which don't close before 8 pm.) Where do you live exactly?

everywhere and nowhere. Mostly in cafés. ;-)

At the moment I'm somewhere in the Gartenstadt, I think. Tomorrow I'll be back in the centre. And my own flat, where I'll be moving in a few days, is (I think) somewhere near the Hain. There's a tiny little Edeka near it, but that seems to be it. And there's a small organic shop near the university. The only bigger supermarket I've been able to find so far is the Tegut at the train station. And the Denn's there seems to be the only organic supermarket(?). They're both not exactly within easy walking distance from my flat, I think. (Haven't tried it yet, as I don't live in my flat yet. Maybe it'll turn out not to be as far as I think.)

Granted, I'm extremely spoilt by nine years of living by the main shopping street of Bockenheim. I had two discounters, two organic supermarkets, two 'normal' supermarkets, about a dozen bakers and Turkish grocers/vegetable stands, and an Asia shop, all within about five minutes of my flat. Several of these were open until nine or ten in the evening, and one was even open until midnight. It was perfect for someone with erratic sleep and work rhythms like mine.

BTW, I may have to have my bed custom-built, so as to make the most of the space I have in my somewhat oddly-proportioned bedroom. Do you - or your parents - happen to know a carpenter you could recommend?

Could you point the way? There are some vids I'd like to keep "on tap" to show the students; having them saved would be ideal.

I don't remember where exactly I got it, some German download site, I think. It may be a German program, in fact. It didn't ask me if I wanted any other language options, anyway. :-(

That said, I use an Italian program for something else on a regular basis, and I don't know Italian. If you only need basic functions, you can probably use it even if it's in a language you don't know. Basically, you copy the URL of the video in the big window and then click "Herunterladen"...

(Grr, arrgh, the touchpad is driving me crazy. Again.)
