hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)

1.) Who knew? Ken's into fur: http://cuteoverload.com/2011/02/07/groom-for-improvement/

(Why's that tangentially LoM related? - What, despite my recommendations people here still aren't familiar with the works of [livejournal.com profile] mikes_grrl? Shame on you.)

2.) The Red Riding trilogy. Haven't watched it yet, but will probably do so soon. Has it had any impact on LoM fandom? And, more importantly, is Andrew Garfield's character wearing Sam's jacket? (So far I've only seen a couple of stills, but in those it sure looks similar!) ETA: Okay, having seen a couple more stills now, I can say it definitely isn't The Jacket.

I'm about to drop dead and so don't have much of an opinion anymore today, but I wanted to let you know that I finally finished the second series of LoM. So, no more pretending that the show isn't over yet, because I still have episodes left :(

Anyway, seeing the controversy the ending brought over the fandom back in the day, I just wanted to tell you that I loved it! Not for a possible happy-end factor - it may have been a lot, but happy it was certainly not - but for the utter fucked-upness of it. And I could see it, too. I think you didn't agree with Sam taking that last step, but during the course of the series (both, but especially the second season), it's the path Sam followed and that until the bitter (and quite horrifying!) end. With each of the episodes, he came closer, IMO, so him jumping off the roof was the only plausible choice he had left at this point. He may have come around eventually, but he was absolutely unwilling to do it, so nothing could have helped him anymore. Horrifying, but very much plausible - for Sam's character development as well as the tone of the show, IMO.

(does the above even make sense? I hope so, but I'm deadly tired, can't really think anymore and should just go to bed. I just wanted to let you know what I thought about the end (Mike feels the same way, btw.), since I promised it forever ago already :) But I hope you are doing/feeling better by now? Since my computer broke down, I completely lost track of people...)

Hey there.

I really can't deal with this discussion right now - it tends to completely eat my life for a couple of days whenever I do embark on it; see various threads, even fairly recent ones, here (http://community.livejournal.com/jumping_off/) for evidence of me going completely off the rails on this. In fact, see threads there for most of the things I would probably say here now. It's not like the arguments and issues I have change.

Don't worry, btw - I can actually live quite well with people thinking it was cool because it was twisted. What drives me up the wall are the starry-eyed viewers who think the ending was OMG SO HAPPY YAY! (That was the majority of the fandom, back in the day - though mostly on the forum. LJ wasn't quite that bad.)

I still think it's not actually a *convincing* dark ending, a) because I think it's out of character/"off message" in the context of the show as a whole, and so feels ineptly tacked on, and b) because they (the writers) really did their damnedest to slather it in happyhappy fairy dust; it's pretty obvious to me they *want* us to read it as a happy ending of sorts, and that just doesn't work (or rather, it obviously does for most people, but that doesn't change the fact that it's borderline-retconny lazy writing.) So, yeah, it *is* twisted, but twisted by accident and laziness rather than clever intent, and that shows. In so many ways. But, can't discuss this today - it's only two days to my extremely important job interview, I need to prepare.

Maybe after the interview. ;-)

Oh, and...

I don't intend to imply that you need my approval to like the ending (when I said "Dont't worry..." etc.) It's just that you may have noticed, at the time and possibly also later, that I have *real* difficulties dealing with people who have certain kinds of opinions on the ending, so I wanted to put to rest any potential fears that I might want to, I dunno, shun you now or something. ;-)

This doesn't mean that I wouldn't go completely overboard in arguing with you about the ending, though. I'm really kind of crazy, in that tiny little spot of my mind.
