one of the biggest things wrong about The Sound of Drums is actually John Simm.

Not that the rest of it is good, either. It's an ep that sort of oscillates between "meh" and "arrgh." But, really, Simm's Master is so unbearable I had to take breaks from watching the ep. And now I think I'll rather watch the 11th Doc Christmas Special first, before advancing to the next ep tomorrow.

Granted, some of the wrongness (a lot, I'd guess) is probably due to writing and direction. But surely, he could have turned down the zaniness a *little* bit? Maybe?

Then again, that would probably not have saved much.

How could this train wreck have followed so shortly after Human Nature, Family of Blood, and Blink, three of *the* very best New Who eps?

I never watched that episode. The reason being, I watched the episode before and had this reaction to Simm!Master:

I like "Human Nature/Family of Blood," even if a) the whole Chameleon Arch business smelled like a set up to bring back a Time Lord or twenty, and b) the ending had too much NuWho science-fantasy "Lonely God" magic. I'm not a fan of "Blink" at all. The angels do nothing for me, and the episode had little of the Doctor or Martha. I liked "Utopia" and "The Sound of Drums" even if I think Simm's Master clearly was brought back all wrong by the Time Lords. It's "The Last of the Time Lords" I like to try and forget. Of course I love Captain Jack Harkness, and the Hermits United Team maybe my favorite TARDIS team in NuWho.

I am fairly certain it wasn't Simm's idea to be so OTT insane... anyway, I find his second appearance a bit more bearable (not much, as it's Tennant swan-songing the life out of it)
