I just found out that I'm legally prohibited from getting any higher-level type of job at a library: they're only allowed to take beginners if they're under thirty. Which I'm not even remotely, anymore. *sigh*

Is that the case for the whole of Germany, or just your Bundesland? And yeah, this sucks.

Yeah, all of Germany, sadly.

Absolutely. Still seems to be largely acceptable in Germany ...

...but you work in a library, so you're not a beginner are you??

I'm a beginner...

because this age limit applies to the two years of formal training you need to advance to the 'higher regions' of library service... so, I could theoretically still get lower level library jobs, but I wouldn't ever be able to advance very much. The work I did at the libraries where I worked wasn't real, proper, qualified work, you see - it was untrained, temping type of work. Doesn't count for shit when you want to get a 'real' library job, basically.

(I'm not actually working at a library anymore, btw. I've been unemployed since October, until a couple of weeks ago, and I now work at a computer hardware company, as untrained office help.)
