hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)

It gets me into this perfect state of flow... and then I come back to myself and look at what I've built and am all "wow, this is great, did I really build this?" And then I go for a walk in the forest or garden or city or village or cave I've built. It's a lot like my architecture and geography-themed dreams, only less three-dimensional.

Sadly, the level seems to be growing out of all proportion. I started out expecting a final level size of maybe 300 screens. Now I've already built more than 200 and I'm aware that that's still less than a third of the world I've planned (I have the general layout sketched out on a big piece of paper.) And since I'm building at a rate of less than 3 screens per day - I can't afford to devote too much time to this new hobby - it will take me frelling forever to finish this level... I'm expecting a total size of 600-800 screens, now. And I started building about half a year ago.

That reminds me - I did start tinkering around with Knytt Stories (and played a bunch of levels - it was awesome). But I dunno if it's just me, but I find that level editor really counterintuitive and awkward. Mind you, though, I get all hyped up about building stuff and then let it rot (which is exactly what happened with RPG Maker, and that's harder in some ways because it involves coding).

IDK. Anyway, glad to hear you're still having fun with it, though! :)

Counterintuitive? Really?

That's odd, because I basically learned all, or nearly all of it entirely by trial and error, which in my book you can only do if something is fairly intuitive. I don't have a lot of patience for struggling with programs, either. But then, of course, different people have different... intuition patterns or whatever you'd call it.

I do admit that I was confused for a while about what layer to put the solid ground on. (It's layer 3. Everything behind that is background. Layers 4 through 7 are object layers - 4 and 5 for objects that are supposed to be behind the player, 6 and 7 for objects in front of the player.)

Anyway... if you want to try again, feel free to ask me about anything that confuses you etc. We could schedule a chat, too.

Ah, addendum.

My Yume Nikki (was that the name) files seem to have been infected by a virus. Do you happen to have a non-infected version you could share?

And here it is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/05xhrf

If sendspace is not an option, I can upload elsewhere. Also you'll need WinRAR to un-rar it. Hope this works better (and is easier to install!)

Yeah, it wasn't so difficult to figure out, but some of it seems clunky to use compared to the other game maker I've used. Could be I wasn't in a great headspace the last time I tried it, which certainly makes a difference. But it's been months since I looked at it, so I'll have to have a go again one day and see what I think.

Maybe counterintuitive wasn't the word I meant...But I will have another try again before going "ARGH HALP" via MSN or something (but thank you for the offer - I will bear it in mind).

Also yes, I have a clean (and easy to install) version of Yume Nikki to share. Will comment again tonight when I've uploaded it somewhere :)
