hmpf: Cole and Ramse from the show not actually called "Splinter" (Default)

I'm sorry for making yet another, the fourth post today (and for not replying to all the comments I got today - I have to work, and can't do any more replying today). I'm just so mystified right now that I have to ask around if anyone else has experienced this, and what it might mean:

For the past few days I've been getting a number of anonymous comments on an old post. The post itself is nearly meaningless out of context (it was a question to my flist about a fic I had posted), and the comments don't make any sense at all. There are no urls or anything in them, though, so it's hard to see them as any kind of 'useful' spam. I can't for the life of me figure out what they're supposed to do. Here's the post in question:

Any theories?

I think a lot of my flist have received them at one point or another. If I'm remembering right they may be bots. The best way to stop them since they're coming in anonymous is if you turn off anonymous posting.

No can do.

I have non-lj friends who occasionally comment.

What are these bots doing? Is it potentially harmful?

I'm honestly not positive in this instance. I know some bots are for search engines like Google, which you can turn off here in the View Options area.. But it seems to me that these are simply around to irritate the frell out of folks and confuse them.

Not sure if it'll work in this instance, but you might also turn on the CAPTCHA feature for anonymous posters (it's at the link in my first comment). Only problem is that'll be a pain in the butt perhaps for your non-lj friends.

I wish I could be more of a help, but there's still a boatload of stuff with LJ I don't know how to mess with (their FAQs are not the best in the world).

It's happened to me once or twice, and I just deleted the comments and moved on. It didn't happen frequently enough to be a major annoying issue? But yeah, I think they're bots. Though to what end I'm not sure. Then again I'm not sure what the point of that completely nonsensical random alphanumeric junk mail is either... o_O
