It is one of the difficulties of our day that the unthinkable nature of the future towards which we are sliding makes it mentally invisible to many of us. "How bad could it get?" we think, trusting that because we've muddled through so far, all will probably be okay in the end, no matter how badly we mess up the planet.

I don't really mean to depress people, honestly. I just think that there are things that really need to be known more widely, because we - humankind - rarely act without a fairly strong motivating impulse. And the common belief that somehow, things will turn out all right, more or less is a dangerously powerful de-motivator, because it makes us believe it isn't really necessary to act. We need to know and believe that things can go catastrophically wrong in order to take serious measures to prevent them from going wrong. ETA: Or rather, to stop what's been going wrong for a good long while now. It's too late for prevention, but there is still time for mitigation, and perhaps time to prevent the very worst scenarios (see above) from coming true.
