One of the things I've neglected over the last few years is going to the cinema. In 2002 and 2003 I've seen less than one film a month. That's pretty sad for someone who loves the cinema like I do and used to see a film a week. In Britain, most cinematic happenings - apart from a few big blockbusters - completely passed me by. Small independent or foreign films rarely make it to the big multiplexes there, and for some reason, smaller cinemas with a selection of off-mainstream films are a lot rarer in Britain, or at least in Birmingham, than they are here. Here in Frankfurt there are at least a handful of cinemas that cater to the off-mainstream crowd; in Brum, I think there was one, and I never found out where that was.
So, since I'm back now in cinema mekka I'm going to the movies like mad, sometimes watching two movies in a row one afternoon (Lost in Translation & The Station Agent), or spontaneously deciding, while out shopping, to watch a strange Hungarian film I've never heard of (Kontroll - just returned from that a few hours ago). I've also seen Spider-Man 2, repeatedly, 'cause there's nothing wrong with a well-made blockbuster, and this is one of the best I've seen.
It's an expensive hobby, but it's extremely satisfying to finally get back into the old habit... I really missed this. I hope I'll be able to keep it up, to some degree at least.
Next movies I plan to see: Hellboy (Saturday), Immortal Ad Vitam (Sunday), possibly Ken Park sometime next week.
I've also recently seen, on disc, Donnie Darko and The Others, both pretty impressive, and Donnie Darko definitely worth watching again. The Others I don't need to watch again, but it was a nicely creepy psychological horror movie with an interesting twist.
BTW... anyone have any idea how to buy the soundtrack of an Hungarian movie that hasn't been released abroad? I only saw it because it's in the official selection of the fantasy film festival here at the moment. I suppose I could buy it on Hungarian websites, but I don't understand Hungarian! And amazon doesn't have it.
Oh... have a trailer:
