It's Life on Mars 2.0!!! Well, the first two thirds, anyway, before it goes all Jerry Bruckheimer. It's all there: the music, the pub, the blueish-brownish station (including the locker room and something that looks a lot like Gene's office), the sexism, the culture clash, two detectives that look and behave like younger clones of Ray - Nicholas Angel even seems to have Sam's room! Not to mention a similarly inflexible, 'married-to-his-work' attitude about his job...

Highly recommended. Don't get confused/discouraged by the incredibly stupid German title; it's *not* that kind of movie, I promise.

(... This reminds me that I *really* need to put "Shaun of the Dead" somewhere near the top of my DVD wish list.)

ETA: Because I need to go to bed and am too lazy, anyway, to write up a 'real' review, here's a nice one I just found:

Now I'm all curious! What does the German title translate as? If, indeed, it is translatable? (I could just ask what the German title is, but... that would mean nothing to me, alas.)

It's kind of untranslatable...

Literally it translates somewhat like:

"Two jerked-off pros", but it isn't really possible to use "jerk off" as an adjective in English, I think, and of course there's a slightly different meaning to it in German, too. The word used in the German title is "abgewichst", which is one of these odd expressions that advertising people seem to think are edgy and hip. As far as I'm aware of, it's neither - it's only crass and rude. When I googled for it just now nearly all the hits were porn sites. (What a surprise.)

In general, German movie translators don't handle comedy very well. They have a long history of tacking extremely cheesy and pointless titles or subtitles onto any English film title if the film's a comedy (and even in some cases if it isn't.) They also sometimes do inexplicable things like replacing the original English title of a movie with another English title they think sounds cooler, instead of giving it a proper German title. They also do terrible things to episode titles: http://www.allabouthmpf.com/deutschscape.htm *g*

BTW, are you up to date with Hellblazer? The current storyline provides lots of Ravenscar info... ;-)

Oops. Wrong URL.
