I'm thinking about finally getting a smartphone but the decision sort of hangs on the possibility of using it also as a writing device while travelling. It seems there are smallish keyboards you can connect to your phone for a proper typing experience; is there decent text editing software, too? Anybody here use a smartphone as a travel typewriter? What are your experiences with it?
Other functionalities I'd like as well:
- good camera (but that seems to be a standard these days anyway - almost any random phone is a better camera than my actual camera)
- wifi (I have a loooooooong commute every day, now! lol)
- mp3 capability
- being able to play some mobile games
- being able to read ebooks (non-proprietary formats)
- possibly being able to watch the occasional movie or ep? This is rather secondary, though.
But really, without being able to write at something approaching my customary typing speed, all this would not be enough to convince me to buy a new device. Ever since I discovered my hip joints were toast I've had to radically reduce the amount of weight I carry around with me, and my need to carry a laptop for writing is becoming a problem. Also, my need to carry a bunch of devices and their attendant loading cables etc. Also, the need to carry a big stack of books when travelling.
I'm also thinking about getting a netbook as an alternative to the smartphone. Definitely not both, though!
Oh, I would also welcome insight into the battery life (not just immediately after acquisition, but a couple of years of heavy use down the road, too)!
