I find it significant (or potentially significant, anyway), that Sam answers to Joni's first attempt to get him to join her in bed with "You're in my care." That's a no, indeed, but it's a no that *could* translate as "it wouldn't be proper". It does *not* necessarily have to be translated as "I don't want to." It certainly doesn't rule out that translation, either - but my point isn't so much that it's impossible that Sam was raped as that we're simply missing essential information, and that what we do know could point either way.
