Improvised croutons

So, yesterday I was making croutons (to go with a tomato and zucchini stew) when my friend/roommate came into the kitchen. The following conversation developed:

Friend: What are you cooking?
Hmpf: Croutons.
Friend: Ah. *Improvised* croutons.
Hmpf: Why 'improvised'?
Friend: Well, shouldn't they be spicy?
Hmpf: ... I could put some spices in, but that's not really how croutons are supposed to be. They're just white bread, diced and fried/roasted in a pan.
Friend: But they're usually store-bought.
Hmpf: ...

So, apparently, food that is freshly prepared is 'improvised'. Proper food is store-bought.

*cries*

*remembers other roommate bringing home pancake-mix-in-a-bottle; cries some more*

So it *isn't* just here! I mean, I suspected as much, but I also suspected that the US were world leaders in sloth and subservience to the all-important "convenience" food. :P

I weep for the future of the world. BTW, you do know about this, right? There's also an LJ feed, if you want. [livejournal.com profile] bigchef is its name. :)

Yup, I know, and I have it bookmarked.

Not subscribed to the feed because of general unmanageability of my flist. I'll probably unsubscribe from most of the feeds I'm still on, soon.

BTW, what about those lentil recipes? There has to be *something* that works without a pressure cooker! And hey, us oldfashioned types who still know the arcane art of cooking have to stick together! ;-)

Just checking. I can't ever be sure people know the various facets of my life and how they intersect, as you pointed out. XD;;

Lentil recipes! Yes. I was thinking of making up a batch of lentil soup today actually. Either that or yellow split pea. Hold on...I've had some good luck with this recipe, which is fairly basic. I'm terribly fond of mujaddara, as well (sometimes it's spelled differently, just FYI. Stupid romanization variations! :)).

I'm also fond of this red lentil stew recipe. :D

That should give you a few ideas, maybe. Unless you tell me you're allergic to onions or something. ;)
