A good friend of mine makes her living as a "Gerichtszeichnerin" (I don't know the English word for it) and though she has very regularly very big ups and downs and even very much trouble to get enough money to pay the rent with when she has a month with few comissions, she never ceases to say that she wouldn't want to do anythingelse. She's doing that job for years now and is not regretting it.
As for sponsoring: From that friend mentioned above I know there is a so called "Künstler Sozialkasse" that helps artists with their costs. How much they pay and how you qualify for that I don't know, though. But I could ask my friend if you want to know more.
