This is very moving indeed; never mind the writing style, you've done a wonderful job here of evoking how Sam feels for Gene never being able truly to come out, at least not until he has retired.

And you've shown how deep is Sam's love for Gene, that he accepts that he can't even fight for his own rights, because of the effect on Gene.
