Third time's the charm, it seems. (HL con Leeds)

After two abortive attempts in 1999 and 2000(?) I'm finally going to a Highlander con, it seems. Like the last time, I bought the ticket off someone who couldn't go - ((([livejournal.com profile] rasmizar))) - but unlike the last time, the con will (I hope!) actually take place (last time it was cancelled just a couple of weeks after I bought the ticket, and I never saw my money again). Weird thing - [livejournal.com profile] rasmizar's ticket is for preferred seating and includes autographs. That's weird for me because I'm really not interested in autographs, and asking anybody for one is an activity that's not exactly high on my list of priorities. If it hadn't been for [livejournal.com profile] rasmizar's need to sell the ticket, I would probably have gotten the cheaper version, without autographs. But, hey, I guess I could simply get the autographs and give them to her, so she won't feel quite as bad about not being able to go there. :-)

Well... [livejournal.com profile] fleta-BABE and [livejournal.com profile] beccadg-BABE, you still looking for someone to share a room with? ;-) (Or, if that's not an option, I'll have to find my own room.)

Got a cheap deal on the plane ticket, too, so that's nice.

So, who else is going to be there? I'm a bit of a latecomer to this party...

***

To Whom It May Concern: I will be in Britain from the evening of March 7, leaving for Germany again on the 17th. I'll probably be in Plymouth for the first third of my stay, then go to Leeds for the con (10.-12.). I have no set plans for what I'm going to do after the con yet. That means: if you would like to meet me, drop me a mail or a reply here, and we can try to work something out. It's not a lot of time, but I'm better rested now than I was in August, when I basically slept all through my visits at [livejournal.com profile] ommadon's, [livejournal.com profile] aminspace's and [livejournal.com profile] torneledhwen's, so maybe I can see you all in one frantic round-trip without falling into a coma again. ;-)

Yay!

Yeah you can share. Chip on in for it. We're there from 3-9 to 3-14

you can crash with me, I don't bite. much ;)

Don't know about Becca though....

we've got regular seats.

You can email me and I can give you my cell phone number tooif you want.

we fly to heathrow and are taking the train up to leeds (much cheaper for us that way)

Of course I'll chip in!

Sorry for the late reply, I got a bit overwhelmed by various Real Life things and writing, and lost track of my LJ comments.

I'll probably only arrive on the first day of the con, i.e. the 10th of March, 'cause I'm visiting a friend in Plymouth before.

We can talk details later, in an e-mail. :-) I'm too tired to concentrate now... reading Spanish archaeology texts is frelling exhausting.

Hotel problem (possibly)

[identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I remembered hearing somewhere that British hotels aren't as easygoing about sharing rooms as some American hotels are, so I inquired with Aine (the con organiser) about it. She said that yeah, it could be a bit risky to try something like that. I'm a bit uncertain what to do now. Getting a single room is a very pricey proposition, even at the con rate, and most of the other hotels I checked out online today don't provide information about single room prices, so I can't tell if it would be significantly cheaper if I chose another hotel. And the only hostel in town seems to be closed for winter. Someone sent a mail over the hlww mailing list a few days ago about looking for a roommate, so I e-mailed her, on the off chance that she may not already have found someone. Haven't heard from her yet.

I'd still very much prefer to share with you guys, though. Just not sure if I want to risk getting thrown out of the hotel over it...

Frell... I feel like I should really talk about this with someone else who has some experience with British hotels and can give me a reasonable estimate of what could happen if we were caught 'illegally' sharing... (BTW - I'd have to get my own breakfast somewhere outside the hotel, too, right?)

Anyway, yeah... don't really know what to do now. :-(

I'm not really sure (and asked my mum, who's visiting right now, and she's not either) having not actually stayed in very many hotels in Britain...and never as an "univited guest". But we both think that possibly the worst that would happen would be that they ask you to leave and/or pay for the night. I think how stringent hotels are probably varies quite a bit from one to another.

Sorry I can't be more help.

On a different note though, I have an extra reservation for the dinner Saturday night as my son...who's staying with me will be off visiting some friends... If you're interested, let me know and I'll let you have it for a lot cheaper.

Dinner reservation?

[identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
How much would that be? I've just found out that I'm apparently one of only a couple of people who have not got a reservation for the dinner... so maybe I should consider it. I just really hate formal affairs, don't have any formal clothing, and don't have a lot of money, either, so it didn't appeal to me initially. But sitting around alone on Saturday evening doesn't appeal much, either...

Oookay... here's a plan:

[identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think we should probably risk it. It kinda makes me *really* nervous, though, so I'll try one other thing first. I've found a number of hotels where a double room costs between 50 and 60-something pounds. I'm going to post an offer on the list to share a room in one of those hotels with any latecomer who still doesn't have a room. I'm not going to book immediately, but wait for reactions, until, say, Monday evening. If someone replies to the offer, I'll get a room in one of the cheap hotels. If not, well, then we share 'illegally', BABEs-fashion. ;-) And in case I get thrown out of the hotel I'll have a list of all the cheap hotels in my pocket so I can move to one of them instantly (though that, of course, will be expensive.)

The whole thing still makes me really, really nervous, but what can you do.

Oh, if I get *too* nervous I could also book a single room in the cheapest hotel, for around 44 pounds a night. I should decide on that very soon, though, 'cause it's only that cheap if you book online and in advance...

Re: mobile/cell phone numbers. Are you sure your phone will work in the UK? There are some incompatibilities, I've heard.

Also: We should text, not talk - calling from a US phone in the UK to a German phone in the UK will be prohibitively expensive, and I have a very limited phone budget.

I'll send you my number in a moment, to your e-mail address you used on the HLWW list. Could you forward it to Becca, too? I don't have her e-mail addy. Oh, and K'immie's also going to be there! We should have a real little BABE meet-up!

Lastly: What are you doing on Friday night? I'll be arriving quite late - 19:45 - but I'd like to meet up with some fellow fen anyway, I think... possibly to have dinner?

Re: Oookay... here's a plan:

[identity profile] fleta.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm all for illegal. I've snuck people before. And Becca and I will likely be like twins and stay beside each other. So one of us could give you their room key. So you can get in and out easily.

My cell may not work, I called cingular and they said I could add in the international calling and see... doesn't sound promising to me though.

We've not made much plans yet. We arrive around 2 on the 9th from the train and leave about 1130 tuesday to take the train back down.

So far, I've been the one handling most of the details. call me picky or whatnot. We're flying to heathrow, train then up to leeds and then reverse to come back.

We can meet up and do whatever. I am a volunteer at the con, so we'll see what happens there.

Well...

[identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
someone replied to my mail on the list, so I've decided on the 'safe' route now - I'm sharing a room at the Jury Inn with a fan from Hungary. Sorry... I'm a wuss, I guess. I was just getting really nervous about the whole sneaking-into-the-hotel issue, so I'm quite relieved now. But thanks for the offer, anyway. :-)

And of course we still have to meet and spend time together and stuff! As far as I know there'll be exactly four BABEs at the con. I guess we'll be the four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse! *g*

Well, I'm not sure about my phone, either, so we should probably find a way to meet that does not require phones. I'll be arriving in Leeds at 19:45 on Friday evening. I expect it will take me at least half an hour or so to get to the hotel and get settled there, but maybe we could meet later in the evening, perhaps at the Queens' bar, or at a restaurant? I'm probably going to be downright ravenous - by the time I arrive I'll have spent 9 hours on the coach. So, I'd probably really appreciate dinner with my BABE clansibs. On the other hand, I suppose I could also have dinner with my unknown roommate, if she doesn't have plans for the evening... or we could just all have dinner together. What do you think?

I'll be staying until Tuesday, too, though I haven't booked a room for Monday night yet - my Hungarian roommate leaves on Monday. Maybe *then* sharing your room would be an option? I'm a lot less nervous about sneaking into (and out of) a hotel *once* than I am about doing it for four days. *g* I'll be meeting a friend from Farscape fandom who lives near Leeds on Monday for half a day or so, but we could still at least spend some time together in the morning and of course in the evening.

defiantely.

Becca and I arrive around 2 pm thursday and I'm a volunteer for the con so I'll be around.

Darius is coming, so we have a male BABE :)

The hotel room is booked in my name, so just ring us up and we can meet up with you for supper or whatnot.

And the room offer holds. No matter what. I\ll risk it for a fellow BABE. Shame we don't have pins made or a button or something. If I could figure a way I'd do it ....

We'll see you there. I'll be off email after noon Eastern us time wednesday. flight and all. we have to go to boston and then to heathrow, then the train up to leeds.
